I have a secret. And it’s taking me a lot of guts to admit this, so I’m just going to come out and say it. I’m a closet High School Musical fan. When all my flatmates are out, and I have the place to myself, I turn the surround sound on loud, hope the neighbours can’t hear it, and pop in the DVD. And I love every moment of it. Seriously.

So, with this in mind, I decided this weekend, despite my highly respected views of the folks at cracked.com, to go and see what HSM Golden Boy Zac Efron’s new movie (17 Again) was like. I decided that for this to be a a fair review, I had to swallow my pride, and not worry too much about what people think of me. So I went to Somerset West. You know, cos there I’d be anonymous.

I made on grave mistake though. I went on a Saturday night. Do you remember when you were 16, and it was weekend? What did you do on a Saturday night? That’s right. You went to the movies. I forgot about that fact. So, I gritted my teeth, reminded myself that I paid a lot of money for my movie ticket, and hoped that the experience would be as pleasant as possible.

I don’t think I’ll ever watch movies anywhere else again. I had plenty of legroom, the screen was HUGE (Easily bigger than my house) and I could see. But for the movie: Zac Efron is looking good in skinny jeans. Yes, he wears them, see below:

Once you bear in mind that the entire movie is totally based on cliche’s, and accept it as that, then it’s not that bad. For a plot synopsis go here. The story is nothing original (Let’s see – Freaky Friday, 13 going on 30, It’s a boy/girl thing, etc, etc, etc), but in my ever so humble opinion, this film executes it way way better than the rest of them. The lead character, Mike O’Donnell, played by Zac Efron, is very likeable, and let’s face it, not bad on the eyes. The rest of the ensemble is bloody good looking, including Silas Botwin from Weeds (WTF ever happened to that show?).

All in all I really, really enjoyed this movie. It was way better than I thought it would be, showing sensitivity, good humour (I LOL’d a fair few times), and not one fart joke. At all. All of this in spite of having Mathew Perry in it. But my favourite character by far is Ned, the super rich, super geek. Man, a part of me really wants to be like him one day. You’ll have to actually see the movie to know what I’m talking about…

You know what, next time round, I may just go and see the next Zac Efron movie without any shame.

You may have noticed that the look of the blog has changed somewhat. It’s now nearing the end of the holidays, and as I sit here on Easter Monday, watching the students return for the second term starting tomorrow, I couldn’t help but share how much I love this place.

This place is the best. All there are is bars (and churches) and for 8 months of the year it is filled with some of the best looking people in the world. I think there must be some sort of screening process, because I have never seen a truly ugly person in this town. Even the ugly people are good looking. Think about it.

There are other things about Stellenbosch that I will always love. The quiet calm of a Saturday afternoon, the way the sun sets in Autumn, hanging out on the Bohemia stoep on a sunny day. The madness of Mystics, missions to Hangbrug, and walking up Victoria Street, any time of the year. Falling in love, walking in Church street on a hot summer’s evening, and listening to the rain from under your duvet on a winter’s morning, just as you decide that that 8am class just isn’t worth it.

Most of all, it’s the vibe. There are only some that will inderstand what I’m talking about, but they know. It’s the vibe. There’s no getting away from it. This place is awesome.

Nerd: The new chic

I often hear the saying: “Nerds are hot.” This was never the case. Nerds were always the kids at school who got 612% for Science and Maths, and spent breaktimes in the library. Which was fine. We didn’t bother them, and they didn’t bother us. But it seems the tables have turned.

Brains are yummy. Not yummy as in: in a bowl, served with a light sprinkling of soy sauce, but actually working, in someone’s skull. And for what is lacking in charisma, nerds totally make up for in brain function. Think about it: whilst you spent your teen and university years trying to kill as many braincells in whatever way possible, these guys were in the library, pumping iron with the sexmuscle of today. That’s right, you have cranial impotence, and they have footlong. You lose.

The revenge of the nerd is nothing new. It all started with this guy:

Where it all started

Where it all started

That’s right. The curly haired kid from TV’s ‘The OC’. His name is Adam Brody. Now don’t get me wrong. He is not nerd hot. He can be seen as the man leading the revolution for geek-chic. Without him there would be many comic-book reading, underweight kids who listen to band you’ve never heard of going without a good session of after-school heavy petting. He did however provide a gap in the market for these guys:

The new hot.

The new hot.

There has been an overwhelming acceptance of these characters. They have spawned their own TV shows (“Chuck”), and I mean come on, who doesn’t like Dwite Schrute from The Office? This fascination with the ‘endearing quality’ of not only a nerd’s incredible brain power but also awkward social interaction, boggles the mind somewhat. In their own special way, they’re even a little bit cooler than us:

Her tattoo: Cooler than yours.

Her tattoo: Cooler than yours.

Nerds have come out of the closet, so to speak. They are still a little socially awkward, but it seems they’re getting better at it. Girl nerds are hot in a nerdy way too. Don’t tell me you’ve never had strange thoughts about Hermione from Harry Potter. You don’t have to admit that you had them, everyone knows it’s true. There’s something about her bookwormish-ness and her ability to manipulate a wand.

The next time you want to get laid, just know that hitting the bar might be the wrong way to go about it. Try the library instead. And before you scream “That’s not cool!,” remember the coolest nerd of them all.
